We are so excited to have John Mullarkey of Malarkey Crafts for our May guild meeting. John Mullarkey is THE name in tablet weaving (you may have heard it called “card weaving”). If his name sounds familiar it’s because he’s one of those “bucket list” teachers – at least, he’s on MY bucket list!
Our weekend of activities will be in the Somerville Armory for the Arts, at 191 Highland Avenue in Somerville – click here for transit and (free!) parking information.
On Friday, May 12th from 7-9 pm, John Mullarkey will speak about uses for the products of tablet weaving in “What to do with all of these bands!” This lecture is at the Center for Arabic Culture. As usual, the meeting is free for Common Cod members, $6 for guests.
On Saturday, May 13th from 10 am-5 pm (with a one hour lunch break) John will be teaching Tablet Weaving: Threaded-In Designs. No experience necessary. Learn the basics of tablet weaving by weaving a friendship bracelet. We will start with a discussion on how to read tablet weaving drafts. Then we will proceed to setting up the cards, weaving the band, and end with a discussion of finishing techniques. Along the way, we will focus on avoiding common pitfalls and sharing tips and tricks for weaving perfect bands. This is in Studio Not 2B. $99 for Common Cod members, $109 for the general public, plus a $15 materials fee (see below).
On Sunday, May 14th (Mother’s Day!) from 10 am-5 pm, John will be teaching Tablet Weaving: Double-card Double-turn Diagonals. Also called “Egyptian” Diagonals, this workshop will focus on weaving diagonal patterns with tablets. We will use the circular warp setup, and learn how to use two packs to create interesting diagonal designs. Patterns will be provided, but individual exploration will be encouraged. No previous tablet weaving experience required. No experience necessary. This workshop is in classroom B5. $99 for Common Cod members, $109 for the general public, plus a $15 materials fee (see below).
For both classes: There is a $15 material fee for each student which includes a shuttle and 20 cards. Students are required to bring yarn (2 balls or cones of one light color, 2 balls or cones of one dark color, size 10/2 cotton or #10 crochet cotton).
Members: check your email for the discount code for $10 off each workshop!
