The beginning of September brings with it the beginning of a new Common Cod Fiber Guild season – and this year is shaping up to be AMAZING! You can get your membership online right now for only $25, or you can bring cash, check or a debit/credit card to a meeting – we can even read chip cards for your security!

First up on Friday, September 9th at 7 pm in room 141 of the Stata Center at MIT is Elaine O’Donal, aka “The Tatting Lady”. Elaine will talk about “What is Tatting, What is not Tatting” – there will be lots of lace examples, and identifying what is tatting and what is not, with an explanation of tools used to make the different laces. Free for members, $6 for guests – and guests can buy tickets online ahead of time.

On Saturday, September 10th in room 095 of building E-51 at MIT, Elaine will teach Shuttle Tatting – a great bargain at only $50 for a 6-hour class plus one hour for lunch. Learn beginning tatting using the shuttle method, from start to finish. This is an informal class, allowing each participant to proceed at their own pace. Patterns will be provided. Materials: 1 shuttle, old or new (if old, needs to be approved by instructor) 2 contrasting balls of thread, size 10. New full balls of thread not necessary; if you have some old crochet cotton hanging around the house, that’s fine. Alternatively, you can purchase an optional kit of materials for $12 when you register, or later in class.

On Sunday, September 11th in room 095 of building E-51 at MIT, Elaine will teach Needle Tatting – $25 for a quick and easy 2-hour workshop. If you can hold a crochet hook, you can needle tat. Beginner pattern will be included. Materials: 1 tatting needle 1 ball of thread, size 10-30. New full balls of thread not necessary; if you have some old crochet cotton hanging around the house, that’s fine. Alternatively, you can purchase an optional kit of materials for $12 when you register, or later in class.

Members, watch your inbox for a $5 discount code for classes!

At 7 pm on Friday, November 11, 2016 the guild welcomes Phil Linsday of R.H. Linsday Wool; details are not finalized yet for the weekend, but we are working on getting a private tour of the mill!

January 2017 brings us a new calendar year, and our popular and free Ignite Craft Boston series on Friday, January 13th, 2017. Start thinking now about the Ignite talk you want to give, or people that would be great to hear in an Ignite talk! If you want to relive the past, you can watch all previous 6 years of talks for free on YouTube.

On Friday, March 10th, 2017 our very own Alasdair Post-Quinn, double knitting maven, will kick off Fiber Camp weekend (link is to FiberCamp 2016 to get a sense of what it’s like). Alasdair will give a great talk and sign his new book, “Double or Nothing”, coming out in December 2016. Sign up to hear about pre-order details for “Double or Nothing” here.

May is big. May is huge. The guild is thrilled to feature John Mullarkey on Friday, May 12th for a lecture, and on Saturday and Sunday May 13-14 for two days of tablet weaving (aka card weaving) fun!

The meeting on Friday, July 14th does not have a confirmed speaker yet, but we will le you know when details are confirmed.

Next September, as a kickoff to our 2017-2018 season, the amazing sequence knitter Cecilia Campochiaro will lecture and teach classes, so make sure to mark your schedule.

If you have read to the end, that means you are probably pretty excited about the 2016-2017 season lineup. What are you waiting for? Renew or become a member today! Members get free admission to the Friday night meetings, plus yarn and fabric store discounts, plus discounts on classes and workshops!
