The Handknit Runway – Julia Farwell-Clay
This is the 6th article in the 8-part series, The Handknit Runway.
Part 1 – Introduction, with links to all the posts in the series.
Julia Farwell-Clay (Ravelry patterns, website, juliafc on Ravelry, twitter) switched from presenting designers to being presented quite seamlessly. (Seamless like her sweaters! Sorry about that, it was just so punny….) Here she is talking about the back detailing on her Mindy cardigan while wearing another of her designs, Hiro.
Hiro has this deceptively simple colorwork yoke in which each color seems to dissolve out of the one before it, which would be great if you like stranded colorwork but are not a fan of the sharply-delineated stripes so common in Fair Isle patterns, or you just want the effect of eight different colors while actually only having to use four. Mindy is a flattering jacket-style cardigan with a short-row collar that can stand up like a mandarin collar or fold down like a small shawl collar. It seems like it would go with everything from business casual trousers to jeans and hiking boots, and Julia says the fit is very forgiving, for those of you who are afraid of knitting for yourself in case you end up with something that doesn’t look or feel good on.
Folly Cove is a worsted-weight pullover that reads as much lighter. Airy and drapy, it has just the right amount of lace in touches at the front and back neckline and at the hems of the short sleeves.
Skipperdee is almost the complete opposite of Folly Cove, with the structure and bounce of the cabled yoke. Julia has a link on the Ravelry pattern page to a video showing you how the “4 from 1″ increase works to make the lateral cable, in case you needed extra reasons to click the link above!
And finally, Julia’s last piece was the pullover Mork. Especially in the delicious bright green of the sample, the lattice cables seem to be growing right up out of the ribbed body of the sweater and down the sleeve to finish with this bold cuff detail.
